Grover Beach

We’re staying here in Grover Beach for one more night, which is just south of San Luis Obispo. Like the other coastal towns we have visited, it’s really chilled out and friendly. The landscape has changed noticeably; the coast is less rugged and the beaches are busy, but the views are still great.

We took a drive to Morro Bay to see the volcanic plug Morro Rock, which is colossal, distinctive and worth a journey for.

The street through town is full of thrifts and cafes,

and we checked out the Sunday markets as well as a record store called Vinyl Isle. No Beach Boys albums here unfortunately but their rivals were well-represented…

Rafts of pelicans glided past us this afternoon as we walked in the sea towards Pismo Beach. I’ve relearned that Nicola is an insect magnet and small spiders, crabs or bugs have surfed up her ankle and left a mark. The heat today has been insane (100 degrees +), and this afternoon has been humid followed by flashes of lightning to the south. We just ate an amazing meal at the The Spoon Trade, which was a bit of a treat. We’ll be chilling out tonight before we make our way to LA over the next two days, stopping in Ventura for one night.
