Food & Drink – Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR

Betel Leaf – First night in Kuala Lumpur and we treated ourselves and went to one of the local Indian restaurants. It was amazing and only cost £12 for chilli paneer, lamb chettinad, their special chicken curry, 2 roti, rice and 2 fresh lime juices! You also eat the main on a banana leaf with a side of dal. We loved it!!

Lokl Coffee Co – Gorgeous cafe which serves a lovely brunch and is very popular! I had eggs florentine and Paul had the frittata. Both were delicious as was the Americano! The coffee here is commonly served with milk and quite sweet and for 2 people who normally drink their coffee black with no sugar, it was quite a shock!

Geographer Cafe – We absolutely loved this place! We went back a couple of times because it was so good!! It had a really good atmosphere and played great music! You can also just go in for a drink and a snack if you don’t want a meal and the snacks include satay chicken and plantain chips! Amazing!!

Like in Singapore, we ate at quite a few market stalls and things once we’d worked out what did and didn’t agree with our stomachs! Central Market is a good option for food. Here are some pictures of a few things:

Beef fried rice which was served in like a mini wok and only cost £1.80! We only got one though because our order of 2 got a bit lost in translation.

A Vegetarian Thali which is like a vegetarian platter with various dips, sauces, rice and veg. We had this in front of Batu Caves and it was really good. It cost £1.80!

Fresh fruit galore! Watermelon is always a good choice for hot and humid days.

Curry Puffs are our new favourite thing. Think of a mini cornish pasty but with the filling of a potato and veg samosa. So amazing that we kept coming back to this stall. It cost 30p for 3!!

Paul had wanted to try one of these for a while but still being a bit cautious with cheese, he opted for the matcha one whilst I went for original. The cheese taste is quite strong in the original one and the pastry is sweet but definitely worth a try! Paul loved the matcha one and couldn’t taste the cheese at all.

This was the best dessert we’ve had since being away and that is a bold statement to make!!! It is called Putu Bambu and in the box there are 5 cylindrical shaped green steamed cakes covered with shaved coconut. They’re made from rice flour, palm sugar, pandan leaf (where the green colour comes from) and steamed in a bamboo tube. They are gorgeous warm and actually taste like some form of toffee sponge pudding. Hard to describe the taste exactly but soooooooo good!!!!!

We have discovered a love of dragonfruit! Really refreshing as a smoothie or sliced. If you like red berries, you’ll like dragon fruit.

Had to put this on just because our Pocky addiction is getting out of control. It is International Pocky Day on 11th November so go and buy a box if you can and spread the Pocky love! Also, just to note that Japan picked the 11th of the 11th to celebrate Pocky because the ones resemble Pocky sticks!

This vegetarian bun was from a small vegetarian cafe and was delicious so I wanted to put up a picture. We can’t get enough of steamed buns!
