KRABI
Mitr-O-Cha – Really good Thai coffee served with ice. We also had some pandan toast which was delicious. Pandan leaves and flavouring is often used to sweeten things or wrap rice up with. It is often compared to vanilla in the western world. The toast and coffees didn’t even cost £2 in total! We went back here when we went on one of our walks and this time opted for a typical Thai breakfast of an omelette on rice. Very tasty actually but really filling!!
May & Mark’s – We went here on our first night and it was recommended to us by the lovely lady running our guesthouse. I had the chicken thai red curry and Paul had the pork and cashew nuts. Both were amazing and so fresh! Apparently, this isn’t the cheapest place but 2 mains and 2 large beers still only cost less that £10 in total! Thailand is unbelievably cheap!!
Coconuts Cafe & Bar – We both fancied something quite healthy after our trek up Tiger Cave Temple so we headed here. We both got a mixed berries smoothie bowl which were gorgeous and fresh. Paul had a hot americano but I opted for an iced one. Very good coffee! We ended up going back here because we needed some stodge and we knew it was good food. We both opted for the chicken and bacon toasted sandwich and shared some chips. Just what we needed! They also do a freshly squeezed orange juice which takes a while to make but it’s totally worth it.
How lovely that the lady running the guesthouse bought us these bananas for our honeymoon 😀 they’re sweeter than back home. Really lovely!
Chocolate doriyaki (another Japanese confection) is amazing. Doriyaki is typically filled with red bean paste but I just love chocolate!
Thai Markets
Thai markets are the best we’ve ever come across. These people know what they’re doing when it comes to producing amazing food and they are unbelievably cheap with most things priced at 10 or 20 baht (22p or 45p). We have tried absolutely tons and have tried to take pics of as much as possible so we hope enjoy looking at them. We will keep adding to this bit throughout our time in Thailand.
There will be quite a few things on sticks and in bags in these pictures! Firstly, these are crab claws dipped in chilli oil. Amazing!
I’m sure you can all imagine Paul’s excitement when he saw this. We both had a (small) kebab with salad and chilli sauce and yoghurt. It was mega spicy!
Thai fishcakes are quite small here but are packed full of flavour and people who love lemongrass will be in their element with these. They are served in a food bag with cucumber and a smaller food bag with chilli sauce. We loved these!
We treated ourselves to a cocktail in a bamboo tube! I had a margherita and Paul had a mojito.
Pandan tarts are basically just like small fairy cakes without the icing and flavoured with pandan leaves. They may not look like it but they are just sponge. Really good!
We both got a small portion of noodles for a lunch. They were both really good (quite spicy) and were only 20p each!
The fresh juices at the markets are amazing! Paul opted for kiwi and I opted for passionfruit.
Paul fancied a sausage and it certainly wasn’t a cumberland! It was an explosion of lemongrass and he loved it.
On first glance, this looks like a fish on a stick but it’s actually chicken flavoured with a more sweet thai dressing. Really amazing.
Paul was very excited about trying one of these squids on a stick. It was very spicy and he loved it.
This was a sausage and bacon kebab with veg, pineapple and a very hot chilli! Tasty!
The sticky pork kebabs are just amazing!!
Another sweet one. We thought they were sorbet but they’re actually a sponge made from palm sugar and baked in a leaf. Luckily, I asked if the leaves were to be eaten because they weren’t and we would definitely have eaten them!
We got all confused here and were supposed to get the thing on the right but we got the things on the left. They were delicious anyway and were filled with yam, beans and shrimps apparently. We are going to try and get the things on the right later so I’ll update this bit later if we do!
These are fried sweet potato balls. They feel quite rubbery really but they taste good.
Another kebab from the Chiang Mai Sunday Market. Really packed with flavour and we both went for chicken.
These are not as they seem! We thought they were sweets but how wrong we were! Well, they are sweet but they’re actually green beans coated in like a jelly and shaped like fruits and veg! There were so moreish and definitely one to try at the Thai Markets.
You can get fresh coconut juice anywhere in Thailand. I don’t think I ever walked down a street which didn’t have a vendor selling it. It’s so good and fresh though and not rich or sickly at all.
These crisps are worth a post just because they are so tasty!
These were from a slightly higher end market in Bangkok called Asiatique. The Chicken had a sweet BBQ coating and the ice-cream macaron was especially good!!
CHIANG MAI
Aroy Dee – Here they prepare all the food in the kitchen in the back then fry it up in the kitchen in the restaurant so you can see what’s happening. Really good pork pad thai and it’s really popular! The pad thai cost £1.15.
Doppio – Amazing coffee place and the owners take a lot of pride in what they do. Easily the best coffee we’ve had so far in Thailand.
Ginger & Kafe – We treated ourselves to a date night at a more fine dining sort of place. Even though it’s high end, everything plus half a carafe of wine still only cost us £25! I had the nasi goreng and an irish coffee for dessert whilst Paul had thai style pasta and a crumble for dessert. Everything was top notch!
Vegan Heaven – Our favourite place to go for breakfast is this vegan cafe run by a lovely lady. The apple pancake and maple syrup is to die for and we will probably have a few more. Paul’s porridge was made with coconut milk and was huge! The toast was lovely and think with vegan butter and jam. They also do excellent smoothies to have in or take away. My favourite is the strawberry, banana and chia seeds one.
The Falafelist – A really nice independent falafel place. Paul had the pitta and I had the salad. You also get some really good homemade dips and pickles. Lovely!
By Hand Pizza – We’d heard a lot about this place and we really fancied pizza! It was gorgeous and they have a really good wood fired oven to cook them in. We had a veggie deluxe and a smoked ham one. Both delicious.
The Hideout – We really fancied a sandwich and this place was amazing! I had the BLT with avocado and Paul had a special one which involved quite a lot of meat. The bagels were made in house and are soooo good. The iced orange tea is also a winner.
Kafe 1985 – This place was recommended to us by PD and we both had the Khao Soi which is THE thing to have in Chiang Mai. The flavour is similar to a Thai yellow curry with crispy noodles. Really good!!
BANGKOK
We fell in love with these 2 places close to our hotel in Bangkok!
Bangkok Cafe – The food was gorgeous here. We tried all 4 major curries (the red was may favourite and the green was Paul’s) and the pad thai. The Vietnamese fresh spring rolls were also outstanding as was the creme caramel style dessert with coffee poured over the top! Oh, I almost forgot the Morning Glory. An extremely popular Southeast Asian dish and the plant is known as water spinach. You can get this pretty much everywhere and it makes a good side dish to share.
The Box Fit – Again, food was amazing. The massaman was really good and clearly slow cooked. The papaya salad was spicy and soooo good. The meatballs were packed full of flavour as well.
