Great Ocean Road

Another epic drive was upon us and we were back to the place we love the most – the coast! The Great Ocean Road is a popular driving route which spans 243km from Torquay to Allansford. We made a special point of stopping off at Torquay and having fish and chips to get us ready for the journey. The weather was kind to us at first and we had a lovely day making our way to a place called Apollo Bay. We stopped off at various points and all were as pretty as the one before. We particularly liked Lorne which is a cute little seaside town, as well as Torquay where our journey began. We breezed around the Great Otway National Park until we finished up staying in farm style accommodation with a beautiful backdrop for the evening.

We were really looking forward to the next part of the drive as we’d heard so much about the famous 12 Apostles and we were not disappointed. Due to collapsing, there are only 8 apostles left but the limestone stacks still dominate the coast by their sheer size and beauty (and are still called the 12 Apostles). We thought that was the best of the Ocean Road but then we appeared at Loch Ard Gorge which is named after a shipwreck called the Loch Ard where 52 people were lost in 1878. The area is covered in walking trails which transport you from one stunning view to another. The weather wasn’t the best it has been and was very windy and drizzly but it didn’t take anything away from the sheer beauty of the place; being blown from one place to the next was also an interesting mode of transport for a change!

The Great Ocean Road gets a thumbs up from us as another ‘must do drive’ if you ever get the chance.
