Hervey Bay / Sunshine Coast

We spent two days walking the esplanade at Hervey Bay. We sized it up, uncovered its secrets. These are the things we learned:

  • It is traditional for chippies to serve their sausages crumbed
  • At Madigan’s Fish & Chips, calamari is served in the shape of a hand
  • In a hot climate it is essential to put jam on your scone first, otherwise the cream melts and it makes a mess
  • Jellyfish by this point are blue and fluffy and the worst they can give you is lice
  • An unnamed Chinese restaurant is rumoured to be serving ibis.

Moving onto the Sunshine Coast, there are no stingers or crocodiles in the waters here. These beaches are gorgeous! We’ve been floating on the ripples of the ocean’s natural wave machine and drying our salted bodies in the sun. There’s not much else to say. We’ll soon be currants.

On the way here Nicola fulfilled her dream of feeding a dolphin at Tin Can Bay. The dolphin’s name was Ella, aged 37, and we were each given a fish to feed her with. It’s strange how the dolphin moves forward with discipline, almost artificially. We also stopped off at Rainbow Beach, where we discovered our passion for doing nothing.
