We’re waiting in line for an express boat to take us down the Chao Phraya river in Bangkok to two of its most popular temples. After haggling prices of longtail boats in Krabi, we’re thankful that ticketing here is consistent, that they’re available either at the pier or on the boat itself. There’s no need to wave at a boatman to get a ride on the water – as long as you use the word “express” when you’re buying the ticket and you get in the right line for the boat with the orange flag, then you’re good to go. These are the boats that the locals use and are a much cheaper alternative to the more spacious tourist ferries that look like ocean liners.
Expect to have jelly legs when getting on and off the boat because the piers are constantly bobbing up and down in the current. You may need to use another person’s body to steady yourself.
